# Configure Buy X get Y

> Create a promotional discount that gives free units when a customer buys a set quantity

A **Buy X get Y** discount gives free units of a product when the customer buys a set quantity. For example: buy 10 licences, get 1 free.

## How it works

* **Customer buys**: a target (a **Product** or a **Product Category**) and a **Quantity** (X).
* **Customer gets**: a **Quantity** (Y) **of** **The same product** **At a discounted value** of **Free**.

The reward repeats for each full set of X units on a quote line. With "buy 10, get 1":

| Quantity on the line | Free units |
| - | - |
| 9 | 0 |
| 10 | 1 |
| 25 | 2 |

The free units are added as a reward line under the purchased line, marked **Free (promo)** and **Excluded from totals**. On the quote, the discount shows as **Buy X get Y** in the discount list.

> [!NOTE]
>
> When the target is a **Product Category**, the rule is evaluated line by line: each product of the category earns free units of that same product.

## Prerequisites

* A role with write access to **Discount**
* The products or product categories you want to target

## Create the discount

**1. Start a new discount**

Go to **Products & pricing › Discount**, click **New discount**, select **Buy X get Y**, and click **Continue**.

**2. Fill in general information**

Enter a **Name** (for example, `Buy 10 get 1 free`), an optional **Reference** and **Description**, and optional **Start Date** and **End Date**.

**3. Set what the customer buys**

In **Customer buys**, set the two mandatory conditions:

* **Product** or **Product Category**, with the products or categories to target
* **Quantity**: the number of units to buy (X)

**4. Set what the customer gets**

In **Customer gets**, enter the **Quantity** of free units (Y). **Of** is set to **The same product** and **At a discounted value** is set to **Free**.

**5. Choose whether to apply it automatically**

In **Settings**, keep **Apply automatically** checked (default for Buy X get Y) so the discount is added to quotes created from a linked template.

**6. Link resources**

In **Linked Resources**, select the **Templates**, **Customers**, or **Customer Segments** where the offer is available.

**7. Activate and save**

Set **Status** to **Active** and click **Save**.

## What happens next

When a sales rep creates a quote from a linked template, the discount is added automatically. As soon as a line reaches the bought quantity, Qwoty adds the free reward line. Sales reps can remove a reward line from the quote if needed.

## Troubleshooting

> **No free units are added**
>
> Check that the line quantity is at least the **Quantity** set in **Customer buys**, that the product (or its category) matches the target, and that the discount is **Active** and within its dates.

> **The discount isn't on my quote**
>
> Check that **Apply automatically** is checked and that the quote's template is in the discount's **Linked Resources**. The discount is added when the quote is created.
